How to Set Goals

How to Set Goals one Goal at a Time

As a New Year begins many people make New Year’s Resolutions of how they are going to do this or that. Many people know what they want their end result to be, the problem is they don’t know how to achieve the goals in which they have set.

Achieving such goals require a plan. Let's begin to learn how to set goals.

First of all, be realistic in your goals. Not all goals are going to be achieved in two or three months. Some goals take longer. That is why the person who is setting goals needs to distinguish between long and short term goals.

If you haven’t done so already, get out a piece of paper and write down all of your goals. Next use a separate sheet of paper and draw a line down the middle. Label one side Short Term Goals and the other, Long Term Goals.

Next prioritize the goals on both sides about numbering them. Use the number one as the greatest of importance then proceed in ascending numbers. As you do this you will notice not all the things on your paper are able to be fulfilled in a short amount of time and vice versa.

For example, if one of my goals would be to write a book, I would first have to determine if this is a short or long term goal. In my case, this would be a long term goal because I am a SAHM with two high-energy children with whom I would have to devote my time to in the day. Not to mention having to take care of the husband and home. Dishes don’t just wash themselves.

Then during the evenings, I would only be able to devote one or two hours to my writings before I would have to get some sleep and start my day all over again as mommy.

Next, after the book is written I would have to proof read it myself before sending it off to be read by a proof reader. Once they have my manuscript it could take a couple of weeks before they get back to me with their corrections and I make the suggested corrections.

Once that’s done, I have to find a publisher to fit my needs and send my manuscript off to them to make into a book. Of course there are other steps in the finalization of my book, but the point I’m trying to make here is that this is a long term goal in which can’t be finished in one or two months.

When you set goals whether short or long term you have to aware of how you are going to achieve your goals. This is the time when you need to be honest and realistic with yourself.

If your goal is going to cost money, then you have to face the fact that you must make money to fund your goal.

While you’re in the process of figuring out how you are going to achieve your goals remember:

  • ”For with God nothing shall be impossible.”Luke 1:37
  • You can do all things through Christ which strengthens you. Philippians 4:13
  • If God be for you who can be against you. Romans 8:31

So if you believe you can achieve anything you put your mind to do no matter if it’s a short or long term goal. God’s got your back. If you just take a minute and put a plan in order learning how to set goals will become as easy as A,B,C
