Forgive and Forget!
Learning To Let Go
Is it truly possible to forgive and forget? What does God say about this topic? How do I learn how to forgive? How long does it take?
Yes, learning to forgive is often times very difficult, but the end result is a person who is free and not held in bondage by hurt caused by another.
Forgiveness is a choice; an act of love.
When you learn to forgive and forget, not only are you releasing any grudges or hard feelings towards another, but you are also doing yourself a favor by letting go of unnecessary stress and anger.
Often times, people are holding grudges against another who didn’t even know they were being offensive.
Learn to let go. Learn to love.
For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. Matthew 6:14
Praise the Lord we serve a God who not only forgives us of our sins, but also forgets about them.
Well I forgiven them once and they keep hurting me. How many more times do I have to forgive them?
In Matthew 18:22 Jesus answered this very same question asked by Peter. “Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven."
That type of forgiveness has no end.
For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more. Hebrews 8:12
So if Christ can forgive us and remember no more, are we any better than He.
Well I can forgive, but it’s the forgetting part that I can’t seem to do.
Understand asking someone to forget shouldn’t be taken literally unless you have the unique ability to wipe out your memory.
Rather, learn to not dwell on past hurts and misunderstandings. Choose to move forward towards mending relationships.
Forgetting allows you to put situations behind you and n
ot allow them to an obstacle in your relationship.
Recognize forgetting is only possible with the help of the Lord. We cannot do this on our own.
Even if the accused offender doesn’t desire forgiveness God commands us as Christian to still forgive and show love towards them.
But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you and persecute you. Matthew 5:44
And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you. Ephesians 4:32
Once we begin to understand no one is perfect and from time to time we ALL make mistakes, we will become more patient and compassionate people towards one another.
